The Halifax Peninsula will soon be cleaner and greener when new hybrid diesel/electric buses hit the road.
To offset the $300,000 cost to upgrade to a hybrid bus, Conserve Nova Scotia contributed $600,000 towards the purchase of two hybrid buses to add to Metro Transit's bus fleet.
Hybrid buses use 30 per cent less fuel than regular buses and greatly reduce carbon emissions.
The hybrid buses can also save money on operating costs because they require less down-time for refueling and maintenance.
Bus riders will see the savings first-hand-the initial fare to ride the new buses will be free as parking meter revenues will fund ridership.
The hybrid buses are scheduled to arrive in 2010.
