Solar Domestic Water Heating

If you are looking to save money on water heating there are several low-cost upgrades you can make to your water heating system:

  • Low-flow showerheads
  • Heat traps
  • Pipe insulation
  • Water tank insulation

Beyond these upgrades, solar water heating systems are a good option. They use the sun's energy to heat water. They are typically used to pre-heat water for domestic use, but can also be used for in-floor space heat and pool/hot tub heating. There are two main types of solar panels:

Flat-plate collectors:

  • Available in glazed and unglazed models
  • Typically less expensive than other solar water technology
  • Less sensitive to overheating

Evacuated tube collectors:

  • Typically more expensive
  • Work effectively in periods of low sun
  • Produce higher temperatures than flat-plates
  • Well insulated, tendency to accumulate snow cover

Conserve Nova Scotia recommends you obtain three quotes before deciding on a solar system and contractor.

Conserve NS provides a rebate on residential solar water systems. The rebate can be combined with Electricity Demand Side Management incentives available through the Nova Scotia EnerGuide for Houses Program.

Applicants building new houses may also be eligible for rebates through the Nova Scotia EnerGuide for New Houses Program. Homeowners must participate in the program to be eligible for rebates.

FOR SYSTEMS INSTALLED JANUARY 1, 2008-APRIL 31, 2010:

Through Conserve Nova Scotia's Solar Hot Water Rebate, you can receive a 15% rebate of the installed cost of a solar water heating system, to a maximum of $20,000.

FOR SYSTEMS INSTALLED MAY 1, 2010 OR LATER:

Conserve NS provides a $1,250 rebate on new residential solar water heating systems.

Conserve NS also provides a rebate for commercial systems.
