CFLs

Compact fluorescent lamps or CFLs save you money and help the environment.

CFL bulbs cost little more than traditional light bulbs but use 75 per cent less electricity and last up to 10 times longer.

Replacing your old bulbs with CFLs can save you up to $40 and cut about a 1/4 tonne of greenhouse gas emissions during the lifetime of the bulb.

Nova Scotians are probably most familiar with the white, curly-shaped CFL bulb, but these bulbs now come in many sizes, shapes, colours and output levels. They are even available for dimmers, chandeliers and bug lights. It is important to read the packaging to make sure that you select the right bulb for your needs.

When replacing your incandescent light bulbs with CFLs, use the following guidelines for wattage equivalencies and for best results:

  • 11-watt CFL bulb = 40-watt regular bulb
  • 14-watt CFL bulb = 60-watt regular bulb
  • 23-watt CFL bulb = 100-watt regular bulb

To ensure maximum performance and for best results, look for ENERGY STAR-qualified CFLs.

Visit any retailer, hardware store or grocery store to find the right CFL for your fixture.
